Andrew (meaning "strong") was born in the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. He was a disciple of John the Baptist until the day John saw Jesus and stated, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" Andrew then went to find his younger brother, Simon Peter, and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah' (which means Christ). Both Andrew and Simon continued their occupaton of fishing until Jesus called them to become disciples and "fishers of men."

For the rest of the New Testement, very little is said about Andrew. He is belived to have been one of those closer to Jesus and was the one who told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes.

After Jesus' death and Ressurection, Andrew went on to preach the Good News around the shores of the Black Sea and throughout what is now Greece and Turkey. He was then martyred by crucifixion on an X-shaped cross. Andrew requested to be crucified on such a cross as he deemed himself "unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus."
