When little Angela was only ten, she and her older sister became orphans and went to live with their uncle. After her sister's sudden death, Angela worried about her sister's soul because she had not been able receive the Last Sacraments. Grieving, she prayed to God and had a vision in which her sister was ascending a ladder to Heaven with the Saints. After her uncle died, she returned to her birthplace, only to be shocked at the lack of education available to the young girls there. She and a group of young women founded Angela's Company of Saint Ursula, or the Ursulines.

Though the women in the community wore no special religious habit and took no formal vows, Angela wrote a Rule of Life for those who lived and served in the community of women. They did pledge to live a life of consecrated celibacy, poverty and obedience. They lived this Rule of Life within their own homes. One of her favorite sayings was, "Disorder in society is the result of disorder in the family."
