Long ago in Ireland, a little girl was born to a Christian slave. The girl's father was Dubthach, a fearsome Leinster chieftain, and her mother was his slave, Brocca. When Dubthach's wife discovered Brocca was pregnant, she was sold to a Druid landowner and since her mother was a slave, little Brigid was sold as well.

Even as a child, Brigid was unable to keep from feeding and helping the poor. Once she gave her mother's entire store of butter away, and it was replenished after she prayed! Even returning to her father's house did not end her charity. Eventually, Dubthach, tired of her donating his possessions to anyone who asked, took her to the king of Leinster with the intention of selling her. When the king saw Brigid give her father's jeweled sword to a hungry beggar to barter, he convinced Dubthach to grant her freedom by saying, "Her merit before God is greater than ours."

After being freed, Brigid returned to her former master and her mother. She was put in charge of the dairy and, although she often gave away milk, the dairy prospered.

When her father tried to marry her to a bard, she prayed that her beauty be taken so no one would want to marry her, and the prayer was granted. It was not until after she made her vow of consecration to God that her beauty was restored.

After this, she organized a communal consecrated religious life for women in Ireland, and she founded two monastic institutions, one for men and one for women. She later founded a school of art that included metalwork and illumination. After years of ceaseless care, she died peacefully of natural causes.
