Saint Raphael ("God heals") appears in the Book of Tobit where, disguised as a human, he refers to himself as "Azarias ("helped by God") the son of the great Ananias ("whom God has graciously given")" and travels with Tobit's son, Tobiah, to meet his bride, Sarah. During this journey, Raphael's protective influence is shown in the expelling of the the demon who had already slain seven husbands of Sarah. After returning and the healing the elder Tobias of blindness, Azarias makes himself known as "the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord".
