Saint John the Apostle, also known as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos and the Beloved Disciple, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. John and his older brother, James the Great, were referred to by Jesus as "Boanerges," meaning "sons of thunder."

John, along with Peter and James, were the only witnesses of the raising of daughter of Jairus, the Transfiguration, and the Agony in Gethsemane. When Jesus was nearing Jerusalem for the Last Supper, he sent John and Peter ahead to make preparations.

John was the only one of the Twelve Apostles who did not forsake Christ in the hour of His Passion. He stood at the cross with Mary and heard Christ's words declaring him her guardian and protector.

John was with Peter when the first great miracle after the Resurrection took place—the cure of the man crippled from birth—which led to their spending the night in jail together. After the Assumption of Mary, John began to travel and preach the Gospel often suffering banishment and tortures. He lived to an extreme old age, surviving all his fellow apostles, and was the only Apostle not to die a martyr's death.

Saint John is called the Apostle of Charity, a virtue he had learned from his Divine Master, and which he constantly taught by word and deed. The authorship of three epistles and one Gospel is accredited to John. He is also supposed by many to be the author of the book of Revelation, also titled the Apocalypse.
