Joseph was a Spanish priest trained in canon law and theology. He went to Rome with the hopes of a promising career. When he arrived, he was shocked by the lack of basic education and bad morals of the common people. After seeking help from all Rome's Orders, he founded the congregation of the Scolopi or Piarists.
Joseph suffered many unjust accusations and investigations, sometimes even at the hands of his own Order, but was restored as head of his congregation before he died.
