The great-grandmother of King David, Ruth was a orignally a native of Moab. After marrying a Jewish man and subsequently being widowed upon his death, she steadfastly followed her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Bethlehem.

There Naomi told Ruth to glean in the fields of her relative, a man named Boaz,  so that she might gain his favor and assistance. Boaz indeed aided Ruth, protecting her and instructing the workers to leave wheat for her to harvest. After some time, Boaz and Ruth were married. Through his purchasing the land of Naomi’s late husband, his name endured, thus earning him the title of kinsman-redeemer.
