Thomas (also known as Didymus, which means "twin") was one of the original Twelve Disciples chosen by Christ. His most distiguishing characteristic was his dedication to Christ and his impetuous desire to follow Christ no matter the consequences.

It was he who doubted that Jesus had truly risen from the dead until he had “touched the nail-marks and put his hand in his side”. After the Ascension, tradition has it that Thomas went and preached to India and was very successful. Around the year 72, Thomas was martyred by a spear at the order of the king for converting his wife and other family members to Christianity.
